ANAEROBIC DIGESTION: anaerobic digestion (AD) is a process in which food waste breaks down in a series of biological reactions, resulting in the release of biogas.
Biogas is rich in methane and can be used in energy production, while the left-
over organic material is rich in nutrients and can be used as a soil conditioner for
further production of food and further refined by composting with garden waste.
AD constitutes energy and nutrient recycling, contributes towards mitigating climate
change by renewable energy generation and prevention of emissions gases and odours from landfills. COMPOSTING: Composting of food waste results in recovery of nutrients that have gone into its production. Often, the organic material left-over from anaerobic digestion is composted and then applied to land. Composting can provide a more easily managed soil improver.
A naturally occurring biological process similar to that which takes place in the stomach of a cow, anaerobic digestion is the simple, natural breakdown of organic matter that occurs in the absence of oxygen into biogas (carbon dioxide and methane) and organic fertiliser called digestate .
By recycling organic wastes such as food, farm and sewage wastes, energy crops, crop residues, grasses, seaweeds and algae, anaerobic digestion extracts the energy in the form of biogas and turns the rest into biofertiliser, replacing the need for energy intensive chemical fertilisers, and/or higher value bio-products and chemicals.
we are Able to produce renewable energy constantly in the form of a gas, biogas can deliver energy in the form most needed – whether that’s baseload electricity and heat, or gas to fuel those areas that are harder to decarbonise, such as heating homes or fuelling heavy goods vehicles.
